Intern Fire Fighter
Salary
This is a non-compensated, two-year volunteer position with no assumption of full-time employment.
The Position
Under direct supervision, Intern Fire Fighters are sworn to protect life and property by combating, extinguishing and preventing fires as well as performing emergency medical assistance in both non-hazardous and hazardous conditions subjecting the Intern Fire Fighter to potential personal danger. This position also includes working with District personnel in the areas of fire investigation, fire prevention and education, interaction and communication with the public, regular training, station, apparatus, equipment maintenance and other duties as assigned.
Fire Fighters generally work 24-hour shifts with an expectation of a minimum of 96 hours worked monthly, attend weekly Wednesday night training sessions and live no further than a 60 minute drive from Penryn Fire Station 38.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Works cooperatively with other District personnel and the public.
- Be able to communicate affectively with the public or District personnel on the phone, on a District radio, face-to-face in a one-on-one setting or in a group setting.
- Respond to questions and comments posed by the public by directing their inquires to the immediate supervisor in a courteous and timely manner.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Be able to move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (20 feet or more).
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
- Learn job-related material through computer programs, self-study, reading, oral instruction and observation to effectively perform job duties. This training will take place primarily in an on-the-job training setting.
- Work with infectious material, cleaning fluids, chemicals, cleaning agents or similar solutions using normal protective equipment.
- Responds to fire and other emergency situations and carries out fire suppression and fire fighting techniques to rescue victims and to protect private and public property.
- Responds to non-emergency situations and non-emergency calls for assistance from the public as requested or directed.
- Assumes a designated position on the assigned apparatus and follows directions and commands given by the supervising officer.
- Performs appropriate entry, rescue, fire fighting/suppression, ventilation, salvage/overhaul including the laying of hose lines, supply lines, connecting of hoses, placement or removal of water streams, nozzles, ladders and other suppression/salvage/overhaul equipment.
- Performs equipment set-up on-scene when directed to do so.
- Maintains physical and mental training necessary for fire fighting and emergency medical care.
- Practices and demonstrates the proper use of all related equipment.
- Has a basic knowledge of the major surface streets in Penryn and surrounding area and the ability to locate addresses.
- Performs daily building and grounds maintenance to ensure that the fire station is maintained clean and orderly.
- Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Be a United States citizen or permanent alien resident who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
- Speak, read and understand English.
- Complete and submit the Intern Fire Fighter application form.
- Provide a DMV printout, no more than 2 weeks old and it must cover at least 3 years.
- Be 18 years of age at the time of filing.
- Be a high school graduate or have passed a high school equivalency exam (GED).
- Possess a valid Class ‘C’ California Driver’s license and be able to obtain a Class ‘B’ license within 18 months of appointment.
- Have completed an approved fire academy.
- Be subject to a grooming and uniform regulation requirement.
- Possess a current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic.
- Have a current Cardio Palmary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) card.
- Be free of DUI, drug and felony convictions.
- Be of good moral character as determined through a background investigation.
Candidate Selection Process
A candidate must be in good general physical and mental condition and be able to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position. An eligibility list of qualified candidates is established through a competitive examination which may consist of:
- Written examination.
- Physical abilities test.
- Oral panel interview.
- Chief’s interview.
Upon the successful completion of the selection process the following must be provided before a position will be offered:
- Provide a doctor’s release from a physical medical examination.
- Provide a recent Spirometry Test also known as a Pulmonary Function Test.
- Provide proof of Hepatitis ‘B’ and tuberculosis (TB) vaccinations.
